Southern Highlands Science and Engineering Challenge winners in 2025 Chevalier College
Inspiring the Next Generation of Innovators

Every May the Mittagong RSL Club comes alive with the energy and excitement of bright young minds during the annual Southern Highlands Science and Engineering Challenge and Discovery Day. Over two days students from Years 6 and 10 take part in a series of hands on activities designed to spark their curiosity and passion for Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
Organised by Bowral-Mittagong Rotary along with the Southern Highlands and Tablelands Regional Group of Engineers Australia and run by the University of Newcastle, the Challenge offers students the opportunity to step into the shoes of engineers and scientists tackling real world problems in a fun and engaging environment. From building bridges to designing efficient power grids each activity encourages teamwork, critical thinking, and creativity.
Supporting the event are over 40 dedicated Rotarians and friends who volunteer their time to supervise and mentor students throughout the two days. Their presence not only ensures the smooth running of the Challenge but also reinforces the strong community spirit behind this inspiring initiative. The cost of running the events is covered by our generous Sponsors.
This exciting program is more than just a competition – it’s a launch pad for future careers and a reminder that with curiosity and collaboration anything is possible.
